Plan Ahead

Behavior change does not happen by chance. It takes some thought and planning to make healthy decisions. Even though your schedule may feel lighter, you still have your health to consider. Ask a friend to join you at the gym or for a walk. Try to choose walking over driving and taking public transportation. Recently, my family parked our car in a structure and then walked to dinner and the ballet and then back to the car after the ballet. It really boosted our step count and was a great way to burn off those calories from dinner.

Choose Wisely

Weekends can be a great opportunity to take a break from cooking and try a new restaurant. So many of us have been dining at home during the pandemic that it makes sense to get out for a meal. Plus it is so important to get out of the house and see other people. With so many of us working from home, it can be a bit boring day after day. It is possible to eat out and make healthy choices at mealtime. First, limit alcoholic beverages. Also, instead of an appetizer order a salad with dressing on the side so you can control the portion. And when your dinner arrives, assess the size of it. Does it look like the amount of food you would eat if you were dining at home? It is probably enough food for two meals. Enjoy your meal but then ask for a carryout box and enjoy half of it the next day. And if you are ordering dessert, see if someone else at the table wants to split it with you. Again, be mindful of portions.

Try Something New

Weekends are great time to try something new whether it is a yoga class or a new machine at the gym. Likewise, having more time allows us to experiment with meditation or deep breathing. Trying something new gives your mind and body a break from the routine of everyday life. It is almost like a mini-vacation. So, give yourself permission to break out of your routine this weekend. And with a little planning you can stay on track with your wellness goals.
