If you regularly experience dizziness, then it’s natural for your mind to jump to the worst conclusion. That’s human nature, after all, and vertigo can indicate serious problems in some cases. # 1 – Take it Easy

Issues including stress and a lack of sleep can exacerbate and sometimes cause vertigo. As such, our first tip is to simply take it easy. At even a basic level, lying down while you’re recovering from a bout of dizziness can improve blood flow to your brain, which should have an immediate impact. Reducing fast movements can also lessen the extent of your dizziness.

Generally improved sleep and lower stress levels will also help to reduce the number of dizzy spells you experience. It’s also important to note that, if you’re experiencing extended or severe periods of vertigo, you should avoid strenuous physical activities like cycling and running, as these could prove dangerous if dizziness hits mid-session!

# 2 – Avoid Known Triggers

Substances like alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes can all cause dizziness and worsening symptoms, as they all restrict blood flow to the brain. As such, it’s worth avoiding these if you’re noticing regular periods of vertigo, especially if symptoms are common after consuming these things.

Instead, replace triggers with things that are known to be good for reducing dizziness, such as making sure to drink plenty of water and eating a healthy diet. This ensures the best chances  of reducing dizzy periods, and may even completely rid you of your vertigo woes.

# 3 – Know When to Get Help

Often, vertigo has an innocuous reason, but it’s important to note that isn’t always the case. Unfortunately, there are times when dizzy spells signify a more serious problem. Getting help in those instances is key to moving forward. Symptoms that signify you should contact a healthcare professional include –

  • Recurring vertigo episodes
  • Long periods of vertigo
  • Vertigo that’s accompanied by sudden head or chest pain
  • Confusion or slurred speech
  • Vomiting

Often, vertigo is a sign that there’s something happening in the balance system within your inner ear. An audiologist can conduct balance testing to determine whether this is the case, and may identify vestibular disorders they can then treat. Equally, a doctor may explore your medical history and conduct physical examinations to determine an underlying cause.
